Why do root caries increase in older individuals and how can they be prevented?

My 70-year-old mother started to develop soft yellow-brown cavities on her tooth roots.

With age, when the gums recede and the root surface is exposed, the cementum tissue decays very quickly because it is not resistant to acid. High fluoride pastes (5000 ppm) and fluoride varnishes applied by the physician are most effective in stopping root caries.

I was wondering the same question, and the detailed answer given by our doctor was very enlightening. Thanks.
