What is the benefit of 3D Tomography (CBCT) for impacted wisdom teeth?

My maxillofacial surgeon said that my wisdom tooth was very close to the nerve and requested CBCT (Dental Volumetric Tomography). Isn't normal x-ray enough?

In 2-dimensional panoramic films, the tooth root and the lower jaw main sensory nerve (nervus alveolaris inferior) appear superimposed on top of each other. 3D CBCT is performed to show the distance between the nerve and the root with a precision of one-tenth of a millimeter and to reduce the risk of nerve damage and permanent lip numbness during surgery to zero.
