Oral care sponges with 0.12% chlorhexidine should be applied 2-3 times a day in hospitalized and intubated patients. It is vital in preventing bacteria in the mouth flora from descending into the lungs and causing ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP).

I was wondering the same question, and the detailed answer given by our doctor was very enlightening. Thanks.
