What could be the hard, painless sore on the edge of the tongue that has not gone away for 3 weeks?

There is a hard sore with white edges on the left edge of my tongue, which I thought was an aphtha, but it has not gotten any smaller for 3 weeks.

Any lesion in the mouth that lasts longer than 10-14 days and does not regress should be regarded with suspicion and should be examined by a Maxillofacial Surgeon or ENT specialist without delay. Alcohol and cigarette consumption should not be neglected.
