What is the difference between an orthodontist (Dr. Dt. / Specialist Dt.) and a general dentist?

While I was researching prices for brace treatment, some clinics gave much more affordable prices. However, when I looked at the doctor's title, it only said dentist, not orthodontist. Should I have orthodontic treatment done by a specialist?

You should definitely go to an orthodontist! A relative of mine had braces installed by a general dentist, the brace remained in his mouth for 3 years, and eventually he had to go to the university hospital because his tooth roots dissolved. The specialist physician receives only 4-5 years of braces and jaw training after 5 years of dentistry.

Physicians who complete 4 to 5 years of intensive theoretical and clinical orthodontic training with the DUS (Specialization Examination in Dentistry) or doctoral program after graduation from dentistry receive the title of "Orthodontic Specialist". Uncontrolled forces applied in the wrong vector can lead to root resorption and irreversible bone loss. A specialist physician should be preferred in order to preserve chewing function and jaw joint balance.
