It is a surgical operation performed to correct the positional disorders of the lower and upper jaw bones relative to each other and to the base of the skull.
Orthognathic Surgery Clinical Overview & Mechanism
Orthognathic surgery is applied in cases such as skeletal Class II (lower jaw retardation) and Class III (lower jaw protrusion) that cannot be resolved with braces treatment alone. Before the surgery, the teeth are erected on the bone with orthodontics for 1-1.5 years, then the surgeon cuts the jaw bones with osteotomy and fixes them in the ideal position with titanium plates.
